Samaresh Majumdar (1944-2023) was an Indian writer, known for many famous Bengali novels, including Jutay Rakter Daag (1989), Din Jay Rat Jay (1993) and Agniratha (2000). Between 1979 and 1989, he wrote Uttoradhikar (The Inheritance), Kalbela and Kalpurush (A Man of Our Time) to critical acclaim. The novels are part of a political quartet called the “Anime Series.” He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1984 and the Banga Bibhushan Samman Award in 2018 for his work in the field of literature. Samaresh passed away on May 8, 2023, in Kolkata, West Bengal, at the age of 79.

Samaresh Majumdar was born on Friday, March 10, 1944 in Jalpaiguri, Bengal Province, British India (now West Bengal, India). He was 79 years old. His zodiac sign is Pisces. He spent his childhood in Duars, Jalpaiguri and completed his schooling at Zilla School, Jalpaiguri.

Samaresh Majumdar wrote his first novel “Dour” in 1967, which was published in 1976 by “Desh”, a famous Bengali literary magazine.
Between 1979 and 1989, Samaresh published three books, namely “Uttoradhikar”, “Kalbela” (1981) and “Kalpurush”, in the “Amritesh” series. The play is set against the backdrop of the rise of the Naxalite movement in West Bengal in the 1960s and 1970s. Samaresh was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1984 for his novel “Kaalbela”. Goutam Ghose directed a Bengali film “Kaalbela” in 2009 based on the novel “Kaalbela”.
In 1983, Samaresh wrote “Khutimari Range”, the first book in the fictional detective series “Arjun”. Samaresh went on to publish more than thirty books in the series, including Kalimpong e Sitaharan, Chandigarh e Gandogol, Arjun Samagra (1-6) and Arjun Ebang Chinese Cigarette.
In 2013, he published the fourth book in the Amritesh series, Mousholkal. In 2014, the Bengali film “Buno Haansh” based on his novel “Buno Haansh” was released. Later, he wrote Satkahan, in which the character Dipaboli became very popular among readers. Samaresh Majumdar has published many books including Lokkhir Pachali, Showar, Haramir Hatbaksho, Ora Ebong Oder Maera, Buker Bhetor Bangladesh, Panchti Rahasya Upanyas, Bondinibash and Kosto Kosto Sukh 》.

Samaresh Majumdar passed away on the evening of May 8, 2023, at Apollo Hospital, Kolkata. According to hospital staff and his family, Samaresh was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) more than twelve years ago. On April 25, 2023, he was admitted to the hospital due to intracerebral hemorrhage. The bleeding led to a stroke and speech and swallowing difficulties (bulbar palsy), which ultimately affected his breathing. As his condition worsened, he was placed on a ventilator. However, he was unable to recover and died of cardiac arrest at the age of 79. After Samaresh’s death, his daughter Doel Majumdar said in an interview,
My father is no longer here. He left us in the evening. His condition has improved a lot in the past two or three days. We are also very optimistic. But today he had a heart attack. He didn’t come back from there. The father’s body will be kept at his house in Shyampukur for some time tomorrow morning. After that, it will be taken to Baligat for the last rites. “
