Samuel Kasumu News

A Tory mayoral candidate claimed that because he was priced out of the city himself, he understands Londoners’ dissatisfaction with the city’s high housing costs.

Samuel Kasumu, who is vying to represent the Conservatives in the election for City Hall next year, claimed that he and his wife were pressured to relocate to the Home Counties when they were trying to buy a home.

Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council member and former Boris Johnson advisor Mr. Kasumu added, “When we got married, we couldn’t afford to live in London.

“We eventually found ourselves in Essex, in a town named Laindon, which I had never heard of. “We ended up there because we could buy a home there for £185,000. We were young, 24 and 25 years old, so that’s all we could afford.

“Since we are both from Barnet, the value of that home increased, allowing us to move closer to our hometown. Welwyn Garden City, a 20-minute drive away, was closer to home.

“So that is how we arrived there. I don’t regret it because any mayor of London needs to be familiar with the metropolitan area, which includes the Home Counties. According to Mr. Kasumu, his wife is currently looking for a house in London that they can buy. It’s largely because of my personal experience that I am so passionate about it, he remarked. I completely understand where folks are coming from because it is only now that we can afford to return.

If Mr. Kasumu were to win the mayoral election, he promised that he would “look at the land that is overseen by the Mayor and TfL – lots of brownfield land, and we want to ask ourselves how we can be more radical with how we’re using that land to build homes.”

He continued by saying that he will come up with more inventive ways to use public and private funds to enhance the supply of affordable housing, as well as publicly shame boroughs that aren’t adding enough new houses.
