In 2003, Venky S or Venkat Subramaniyam (bassist) and Samar Puri were classmates and decided to form a band; Samar asked Sanam to be the lead vocalist of the band. After completing their studies, they both moved to India for college. While in college, they both participated in the college rock scene and Sanam started participating in various singing competitions and won every one of them. In Delhi, he was also a part of the band “Bandish”. Venky met Keshav Dhanraj (drummer) in the college rock scene and together they formed a band called “The Previous Band”.
The band was active for a short while when two of the band members went to the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music. In 2009, Sanam and his brother went to Mumbai to pursue a career in music. It was Venky who brought all the band members back together and in 2010, they all participated in a national competition called Times Music Superstars and dubbed as the SQS Project.

In 2012, the band met Ben Thomas, managing director of Kurian & Co Talent Management, which has managed the careers of music artists such as Sonu Nigam and Vishal-Shekhar. The band has two more studio albums, Samar Sanam (2011) and Sanam Revolution (2018), and several compilation albums, In Love with Sanam (2017), Sanam Revisited (2015), Universally Sanam (2019), and Memories Vol. 1 (2020). The band gained recognition by posting their songs on YouTube; the first was a cover of “Ainvayi Ainvayi” in October 2012.
The band received Youtube recognition in 2015. Sanam Puri made her debut as a dubbing singer with the Bollywood song “Dhat Teri Ki” from the film Gori Tere Pyar Mein (2013).
In the same year, the band also released its first OST “Main Hoon” for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”.
In 2014, the band changed its name to “Sanam”, which means “love” in Sanskrit, Urdu, Persian and Arabic. In 2014, he made his debut in Telugu as a dubbing singer with the song “E Kadha” from the film Chandamama Kathalu.
He made his Bengali debut with the song “Priyotoma” from the film Jajabor (2015). The band released the single “Sanam Mennu” in 2018, which made the band MTV Beats’ Artist of the Month; the song was written by Sanam Puri.
The band has many hit singles to its credit, including Tu Yahaan, Ek Pyar Nagma, Kahi Door, Chala Jata Hoon, Fakira and Jane De Pyar.

In 2015, he recorded the song “Coffee Peetey” for the film Gabbar is Back. However, to his surprise, the soundtrack was released without Sanam’s credit. The song was reportedly credited to Dev Negi. Talking about this, he said,
They released my version without giving me credit. Now only my regulars know it’s mine, everyone else thinks it’s Dev’s voice. It’s so unfair. I tried to contact the production company but no one wanted to tell me or correct this mistake”

- His nickname is “Salmon”, which was retained by band member Keshav.
- His father often listened to Indian music, which had a great influence on Sanam and his brothers to learn Indian music.
- At the age of six, he started composing music with his elder brother. Sanam and Samar would compose songs for their parents whenever they wanted to surprise them. Their parents often forced them to sing at parties.

- He started singing at the age of six. Initially, he had no intention of pursuing music, but it was only after his mother and elder brother encouraged him to pursue it seriously that he finally realized his love for music when he came to Mumbai.

I was bullied, by members of my drama club. My seniors locked me in a room and spoke to me in a way that I can’t even describe. They used vulgar language to make the situation more horrible. It was such an emotional torture. The weirdest part was that my seniors apologized for what they had done to me. I shared this experience with my parents and they advised me not to take it too seriously.”
