According to Sanil, he started playing table tennis when he was nine years old. During the initial stages of his career, Sanil was trained by his older brother. After training with his brother for a few years, Sunil Shetty joined the YMCA in Mumbai where he was trained by Indian table tennis player Deepak Mani for twelve years . After training under Deepak Mani, Sanil Shetty moved to Frankfurt, Germany. There, he trained under the guidance of veteran German table tennis player Peter Engel. In 2012, Sanil Shetty represented India in the Dawn Cup held in Iran and won a bronze medal. In the same year, Sanil Shetty participated in the qualifying rounds of the 2012 London Summer Championship. He failed to make the Indian team as he was defeated in the qualifying quarter-finals. In 2012, I had a chance to qualify for the Olympics, but unfortunately, I lost in the quarterfinals. I didn’t make it to the finals. I just collapsed. If I qualify, I can go to the Olympics. It did take me some time to regain my confidence and convince myself that I had to snap out of it and that the mistake was irreversible. “
Sanil Shetty participated in the 2014 National Senior Table Tennis Championships and Inter-State Table Tennis Championships and won the competition. After winning the competition, Sanil became the second Mumbai paddler since 1995 to win the title. Later that year, Sanil Shetty won a silver medal at the 2014 Dawn Cup in Iran. In 2015, Sanil Shetty won the gold medal at the Asian Table Tennis Championships. The competition is held in Thailand. In 2016, Sunil Shetty represented Bharat Petroleum Corporation in the International Petroleum Table Tennis Championships and won the competition.

- Sanil Shetty claimed in an interview that his table tennis journey started with a table tennis racket given to him by his elder brother on his 9th birthday. He further said,
I still remember, it was my ninth birthday and my brother was coming home from a game in Mumbai. He gave me a racket and that marked the beginning of my journey.
- According to Sanil Shetty, he was born prematurely and had a hole in his heart. Doctors advised his parents not to let him participate in any form of physical activity as it would put enormous stress on his heart, which could threaten his life. He also said he had to undergo various treatments for five years. Sanil said in an interview,
When I was born, there was a hole in my heart. Of course, as the doctor said, my parents were scared. I was too sensitive to participate in any serious exercise. So as a kid my parents put me in various art classes. I would study drawing, painting and all kinds of stuff. I was on homeopathic medicine until I was nine or ten. The doctor said nothing could be done. Our domestic help used to take me to school and drop me home. I also have breathing problems. “
