Sanjay Arora, a 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Tamil Nadu cadre, took charge of the Delhi Police on August 1, 2022 after his inter-cadre deputation was approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs Director. He is the second non-AGMUT cadre IPS officer to serve as Delhi Police Commissioner and the third since the passage of the Delhi Police Act, 1978. Prior to his posting in Delhi, he served as the Director General of Indo-Tibetan Border Police.

Sanjay Arora is a 1988 batch officer of Tamil Nadu cadre. In 1991, after receiving training from the NSG, Arora played a key role in forming the Special Security Group (SSG) to provide security to the Tamil Nadu CM when the Tamil armed group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) LTTE) is at its peak. He has also held leadership positions in central police organizations such as CRPF, BSF and ITBP. From 1997 to 2002, he served as the Commander of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), a paramilitary force. From 1997 to 2000, he commanded a border guarding ITBP battalion in Matli, Uttarakhand. He contributed to the field of training as an instructor as Commanding Officer (Combat Wing) at ITBP Academy, Mussoorie from 2000 to 2002. He has served in various capacities with the Tamil Nadu Police, including from 2002 to 2004. He has served as Additional Commissioner (Crime and Headquarters) and Additional Commissioner (Traffic) of the Chennai City Police. As Superintendent of Police (SP) of the Special Forces, he hunted down forest bandit Veerappan, for which he was awarded the Minister’s Medal for Gallantry. He has served as Inspector General (Special Operations), BSF, Inspector General (Chhattisgarh District) and Inspector General (Operations), CRPF.

Arora has also served as deputy inspector general of police and deputy director of vigilance and anti-corruption in Villupuram range. Later, he was posted as ADGP (Operations) and ADGP (Administration) of Tamil Nadu Police. Later, he was appointed as ADG (Headquarters and Operations) of CRPF and Special Director General (J&K) of CRPF and finally as Director General of ITBP on August 31, 2021. In December 2021, Sanjay Arora, during his tenure as Director General, ITBP, assumed the additional charge of Commander-in-Chief, SSB from Kumar Rajesh Chandra, DG SSB, SSB Force Headquarters, New Delhi. He serves as Director General of ITBP till July 31, 2022; Arora’s successor is Sujoy Lal Towson.

He took charge as Delhi Police Commissioner on August 1, 2022, replacing 1984-batch SP Rakesh Asthana, who retired after one year as Delhi Police Commissioner. The inter-cadre delegation of Tamil Nadu cadre IPS officer Arora to the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram and Union Territories) cadre has been approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) of approval. He is expected to retire in 2025.

- The Delhi Police comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs and its officers belong to the AGMUT cadre. Sanjay Arora has been appointed as Delhi Police Commissioner, marking the third time that the central government has chosen an “outsider”, a police officer who is not part of the AGMUT cadre, for the post of Delhi’s top police officer. In 1999, Ajay Raj Sharma from UP cadre was appointed as Delhi Police Commissioner. The experiment was not repeated until July 2021, when Rakesh Asthana, a Gujarat cadre, was appointed as Delhi Police Commissioner.
