The Delhi High Court issued a stay order on the film, claiming it had hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus. The title of the film was later changed to Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-leela and it was released in India as planned, but the Allahabad High Court banned the film and hence the film was not released in Uttar Pradesh.
In January 2017, members of the Shri Rajput Karni Sena physically attacked him during the filming of the film Padmaavat, originally titled Padmavati, claiming that he had portrayed some wrong facts in the film .
