Sanjay Raut is an Indian politician from the Shiv Sena. He is a member of the Rajya Sabha and spokesperson of the Shiv Sena.

Sanjay Raut was first elected to the Maharashtra Rajya Sabha in 2000. In 2005, he was appointed as Shiv Sena leader. From October 2005 until May 2009, he served as a member of the Home Affairs Committee and the Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Civil Aviation. In 2010, Raut was re-elected to the Maharashtra Rajya Sabha for a second term. In 2010, he was appointed as a member of the Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, Public Distribution and Power. In 2016, he was elected to the Maharashtra State Assembly for the third time.

- After Bal Thackeray’s death on November 20, 2012, Mumbai was placed under lockdown and two women were arrested for posting anti-lockdown comments on Facebook. One of the two women, aged 21, commented on a post and the other liked the comment. After his arrest, Raut said the Shiv Sena supported the arrest of the women as their comments would worsen the law and order situation. His remarks were strongly opposed by many people.
- On April 13, 2015, some people and political parties accused Raut of trying to fan communal tensions. Sanjay Raut published an article in Saamana, the mouthpiece of the Shiv Sena, stating that voting rights should be taken away from Muslims to ensure that they are not used for vote bank politics . Many said they were disgusted to hear such things in a democratic country like India and not in a Taliban country.
- On August 24, 2017, Sanjay Raut threatened Naypadmasagarji Maharajsaheb (Jain monk) for filing a complaint against him for violating the voting code of conduct, calling him a terrorist and linking him with Islamic preacher Zaki Comparable to Zakir Naik. His remarks came after Naypadmasagarji Maharajsaheb urged the Jain community to support the BJP and move towards a meat-free society. The All India Jain Minority Group criticized Raut’s remarks and said they were deeply saddened and offended by his remarks.
- On April 15, 2019, he said at a Ram Navami event: “People are always scared of the code of conduct. However, to hell with the law! We are the kind of people who would rather speak our inner thoughts Nor do we want to suffocate people. We will consider the implications of the model code of conduct.”
- On October 25, 2019, when the results of the Maharashtra Assembly elections were announced and the BJP’s support dropped, Sanjay Raut tweeted a picture of a tiger wearing a clock Pictures of locket (NCP party symbol), smelling lotus (BJP party symbol). - There was a spat between Sanjay Raut and Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut after the death of Sushant Singh Rajput. The entire controversy started after Kangana called Mumbai unsafe after Rajput’s death on June 14, 2020. Following her comments, the state’s Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said she had no right to stay in Mumbai. Later, Kangana accused Sanjay Raut of threatening her and said “why does Mumbai feel like Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.” This comment further escalated between the Shiv Sena and Kangana Ranaut. Amid the growing feud between Kangana Ranaut and the Maharashtra government, the central government granted her ‘Y+’ security cover.
- On July 31, 2022, ED officials arrested Patra Chawl in the case after raiding his residence in Mumbai for nine hours. According to the agency, they recovered Rs 1.15 million in unaccounted cash from his residence.
- In August 2022, an FIR was lodged against Raut at Vakola police station under Sections 504, 506 and 509 of IPC after an audio clip went viral in which Raut insulted the wife of Sanjay Raut’s close aide Sujit Patkar Swapna Patkar. Swapna was reportedly a witness in the Patrajaur land case. On August 8, 2022, the Mumbai Special Court sent him to judicial custody till August 22, 2022. On November 9, 2022, a Mumbai court granted him bail, and he was released from prison more than three months later.
- Rahul Shewale of Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) filed a defamation suit against Uddhav Thackeray and Sanjay Raut after Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana published an article that allegedly defamed him. Both were later released on bail on a cash bond of Rs. 15,000. The court fined them Rs. In 2000, they delayed submitting revisions by 84 days. In July 2024, Thackeray and Raut requested the special court to give them two more days to pay Rs. 2000 fine. However, Schewel’s defenders asked the court to reject their application.

- In June 2023, Sanjay Raut filed a defamation suit in the Mulund district court to initiate legal proceedings against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya. Raut said Somaiya had leveled multiple allegations against him through social media posts, accusing him of being involved in various fraudulent activities. The posts are dated August 9, August 24, January 22, and June 13, all in 2022. Raut claimed that Somaiya’s intention behind these remarks was to damage Raut’s reputation. Specifically, one of Somaiya’s tweets accused Raut of being involved in the Rs 100-crore Covid hub scam and suggested that Raut should be jailed. Raut’s petition highlights that these defamatory statements, which have no basis in fact, were widely circulated through various publications. As a result, Lauter’s reputation and goodwill were severely damaged.
