Profession

Sanjay Raut was first elected to the Maharashtra Rajya Sabha in 2000. In 2005, he was appointed as Shiv Sena leader. From October 2005 until May 2009, he served as a member of the Home Affairs Committee and the Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Civil Aviation. In 2010, Raut was re-elected to the Maharashtra Rajya Sabha for a second term. In 2010, he was appointed as a member of the Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, Public Distribution and Power.   • After Bal Thackeray’s death on November 20, 2012, Mumbai was placed under lockdown and two women were arrested for posting anti-lockdown comments on Facebook. One of the two women, aged 21, commented on a post and the other liked the comment. After his arrest, Raut said the Shiv Sena supported the arrest of the women as their comments would worsen the law and order situation. His remarks were strongly opposed by many people.
  • On April 13, 2015, some people and political parties accused Raut of trying to fan communal tensions. Sanjay Raut published an article in Saamana, the mouthpiece of the Shiv Sena, stating that voting rights should be taken away from Muslims to ensure that they are not used for vote bank politics .   • On August 24, 2017, Sanjay Raut threatened Naypadmasagarji Maharajsaheb (Jain monk) for filing a complaint against him for violating the voting code of conduct, calling him a terrorist and linking him with Islamic preacher Zaki Comparable to Zakir Naik. His remarks came after Naypadmasagarji Maharajsaheb urged the Jain community to support the BJP and move towards a meat-free society. The All India Jain Minority Group criticized Raut’s remarks and said they were deeply saddened and offended by his remarks.

  • There was a spat between Sanjay Raut and Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut after the death of Sushant Singh Rajput. The entire controversy started after Kangana called Mumbai unsafe after Rajput’s death on June 14, 2020. Following her comments, the state’s Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said she had no right to stay in Mumbai.   • In August 2022, an FIR was lodged against Raut at Vakola police station under Sections 504, 506 and 509 of IPC after an audio clip went viral in which Raut insulted the wife of Sanjay Raut’s close aide Sujit Patkar Swapna Patkar. Swapna was reportedly a witness in the Patrajaur land case. On August 8, 2022, the Mumbai Special Court sent him to judicial custody till August 22, 2022. On November 9, 2022, a Mumbai court granted him bail, and he was released from prison more than three months later.
  • Rahul Shewale of Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) filed a defamation suit against Uddhav Thackeray and Sanjay Raut after Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana published an article that allegedly defamed him.
