Sarah Lancashire was visibly moved when she accepted the Drama Performance Award at the National Television Awards on Tuesday night. The actress won a major award for her performance as Sergeant Catherine Cawood in the gritty BBC drama Happy Valley.
Later in the show, she picked up a special award for her incredible contribution to television acting.

The star took to the stage of London’s O2 arena for the first time when the series written by Sally Wainwright picked up the award for best series. Sarah, along with bosses and the extended cast behind the show, accepted the award and was seen fighting back tears.

Soon after, Sarah won the award for best dramatic performance. She began to tell the crowd: “Thank you so much for this. I loved every scene, every moment of Happy Valley. And I know I’ll never forget that, and the brilliant people I worked with, like the BBC who supported us.”

“I have to say something about Sally Wainwright because she is Happy Valley, she is what makes her, her writing is so extraordinary, her characters are extraordinary and anyone who receives those words is the luckiest actor in the world, really.”
Sarah continued and made sure to say hello to her fellow program members. “To James Norton, Siobhan Finneran who was my partner in crime for three years and is an amazing actress.” She ended by saying, “My family walks with me every step of the way and I’m incredibly lucky to have them in my life.”

Not only did Sarah win big Happy valley, but she also received a Special Award. A video montage shown on the screen, with Sarah watching from the audience, shows a number of her former colleagues discussing the great talent that is Sarah.
Nicola Walker, who starred alongside Sarah in Last Tango in Halifax, said: “She doesn’t care what you think of Sarah Lancashire. The ego is not there. She only cares about the story.”
Accepting the big win, she told the crowd at the O2: “I’m extremely lucky to have enjoyed every moment [of my career].”

She continued: “There are also drivers who very quietly stand in the wings without expectation or credit, which is my family, my husband, my children, my friends, my agent, Nick, thank you. And of course, a very vital component in all of this is you you, the audience.”
Happy Valley aired its third and final season earlier this year to the delight of fans. Returning to screens many years after the previous two seasons, the story picks up seven years after the story with Ryan now 16 and Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) serving a long prison sentence.

Speaking candidly about ending the BAFTA-winning series after three seasons, Sally Wainwright explained: “I wasn’t relieved. It’s good to know when to stop. I didn’t want it to drag on,
“I didn’t want it to become a shadow of itself. I wanted it to be remembered. I was desperately hoping that people would react to the last series the way they did to the first two, and not think of it as a bad ending to what was otherwise a good series. series.”
