Sarah Mcmullan News

A BBC Scotland reporter recently discussed how she interviewed a woman who had sepsis just weeks before but failed to recognise her own symptoms.

Presenter Sarah McMullan began to feel “really cold” during a morning shift, but she didn’t call NHS 24 for more than 36 hours. Her temperature rose to 40 degrees while she was in the hospital for six days. Sarah acknowledged that she was extremely fortunate and said, “I should’ve acted sooner.”

Following an interview she gave for BBC Scotland’s The Nine on September 1 as part of Sepsis Awareness Month, the presenter became ill in the first few days of October.

Kimberley Bradley spoke on the episode about her experience with meningococcal septicaemia that turned into sepsis and put her in an artificial coma for eight days. It is a rare but dangerous infection consequence sometimes known as blood poisoning.

The 30-year-old Sarah stated on the Drivetime programme on BBC Radio Scotland that “she spoke through all of the symptoms and what to look out for and what to remember and when to get help and I did not remember them well enough.”

A few weeks later, the journalist suffered goosebumps and cold sweats while working on the morning broadcasts in the BBC Scotland studio at Pacific Quay in Glasgow. Then, Sarah told a coworker that “really not right” was the situation.
