Sasikanth Senthil News

The party circles praised their “4 S cards” for securing the Congress’ best-ever showing in the state since 1989 as it swept to power in Karnataka, winning 135 seats in the elections for the 224-member Assembly.

The head of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), D K Shivakumar, and former chief minister Siddaramaiah are two of the “4 S’s”; the third is poll strategist Sunil Kanugolu.

Sasikanth Senthil, a 44-year-old former IAS officer who oversaw the Congress’s war room in Bengaluru and was instrumental in shaping the narrative against the Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP government over corruption, represents the fourth “S” in this important group of individuals who helped the party win.

Based on Senthil’s concepts, the Congress launched a number of anti-corruption campaigns against the BJP, focusing particularly on its “40% commission government” platform. The “PayCM” campaign, which featured posters with a QR code and a picture of CM Bommai titled “PayCM,” was the most creative of these. The posters accompanied Bommai to Hyderabad, where banners reading “Welcome to 40% commission CM” appeared as he arrived.

Senthil, an IAS officer from the 2009 batch and a member of the Karnataka cadre, resigned from the IAS in September 2019 while working as a Deputy Commissioner (DC) in the politically sensitive Dakshina Kannada district, claiming that it was “unethical” for him to continue in his position “as a civil servant in the government when the fundamental pillars of our diverse democracy are being compromised in an unprecedented manner.”

After that, Senthil had stated, “I also feel strongly that the coming days will present extremely difficult challenges to the basic fabric of our nation and I would be better off outside the IAS to continue with my work at making life better for all,” he said.

Senthil, a fervent opponent of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) / National Register of Citizens (NRC) proposal put up by the Narendra Modi-led BJP administration, afterwards journeyed throughout the nation to engage with individuals and activists demonstrating against it. Senthil, a socialist by conviction, later made the decision to join the Congress.

Senthil, a Tamil Nadu native, joined the Congress in November 2020 and stated that he has always fought for the welfare of the people and will continue to do so in the presence of senior Tamil Nadu party leader KS Alagiri and then AICC general secretary Dinesh Gundu Rao.

Senthil initially collaborated with the Congress’ training division. He worked in the party’s war room in Chennai during the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. He was given the responsibility of coordinating relations between Rahul Gandhi and members of civil society during the three-week Karnataka leg of his Bharat Joda Yatra in September and October after the party was impressed by his work. This, according to party sources, moved him closer to Rahul.

Senthil’s tenure as the Dakshina Kannada DC from June 2017 to September 2019 was praised by a portion of the BJP members for his pro-people measures and his severe action against the nexus of sand mafia and its political masters, notwithstanding his tough stance against right-wing forces.
