Apparently, the duo has been in good form this year and they also won the Asian Badminton Championship. However, India’s rise to world No. 1 in men’s doubles is phenomenal because the country has never had a culture to emulate in this massively competitive discipline. On Tuesday, the Indian men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty created history as they became the first pair from the country to become world No. 1. The duo received the honor after winning the men’s doubles competition at the Asian Games last week. According to the NFW rankings, the Indian duo dethroned after Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Adrianto became the world’s number one team. However, they scored a total of 92,411 points, 2000 more than the next best team. Moreover, they had between South Korean pair Sol Gyu Choi and Won Ho Kim in the final of the Asian Games to reach the top of the rankings. It has been confirmed that prior to Satwik-Chirag, the only Indian pairs to make significant progress in the BWF rankings were V Diju/Jwala Gutta and Jwala Gutta/Ashwini Ponnappa. However, the mixed doubles pair once became WR-6 in the world, while the group had a career-best ranking of 10 partners. While, apart from Satwik-Chirag, he did not fare well in this week’s rankings and despite everything, the Asian Games bronze medalist dropped a step to WR-8.
