Arrested on suspicion of involvement in money laundering case
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Saumya Chaurasia on December 2, 2022, under criminal sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in connection with a money laundering case. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) claimed that Saumya was reportedly working with coal trader Suryakant Tiwari and accused her of extorting around Rs 150 crore from coal and mining traders and transporters in Chhattisgarh. The Income Tax department went through the Whatsapp chats of Saumya and Suryakant and it was clear that she disclosed some important confidential information to him. ED department officials claimed that Saumya abused his strong political influence by encouraging Suryakant and his associates to collect over Rs 500 crore since 2021 by levying an illegal tax of Rs 25 per ton on every ton of coal transported in Chhattisgarh of illegal funds. She is accused of using illegal funds to pay for election expenses and accumulating improper assets in her family’s names. In a tweet, Bhupesh Baghel termed the deputy secretary’s arrest as a “political act” and wrote:
As I said, the arrest of my deputy secretary Saumya Chaurasia by the Ministry of Education is a political act. We will fight this with all our might. ”

- Saumya is fondly called the “Super CM” by his supporters in Chhattisgarh.
- In February 2020, the income tax department raided the residence of Saumya Chaurasia in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, but failed to recover any illegal items, following which Bhupesh Baghel expressed his displeasure and approached Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rendra Modi wrote an official letter describing the entire situation as “unconstitutional” and “politically motivated”.
- In July 2022, the Income Tax Department raided Saumya’s residence in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh and seized undeclared cash and jewelery worth Rs 14 crore and she was presumed to have evaded income tax worth Rs 1 crore.
