After releasing four EPs, dozens of singles, countless collaborations and earning two Grammy nominations, Saweetie admits she still gets “nervous” with each new song she releases.

“I’m nervous with every release. I can’t help it,” the 30-year-old Bay Area rapper tells PEOPLE while promoting her new partnership with Postmates and The Boiling Crab. “I have stage fright, I can’t sleep at night and I feel like I’m sharing such an intimate part of me because it’s created in the studio and then you end up sharing it with the world.”

The two-time Grammy-nominated artist says that feeling of nervousness “never goes away,” despite continuing to churn out fan-approved hits like her latest single, “Nani.”

Reflecting on the outcome of the track — which she first teased in March before dropping it on Friday, May 17 — the “Icy Grl” star says she’s “really grateful” to listeners for embracing it so quickly.

“It’s the first time I feel like there’s just a consensus that it’s a good song,” Saweetie shares, adding that her goal was to make the single sound like “a fun, cool summer day with your family or friends. ” “I haven’t really had to fight much online, if you know what I mean. Even the haters congratulated me, backhanded compliments… They just have to give credit where credit is due.”

For her next set of songs — which she’s already played for her record label — Saweetie promises more summer anthems, no-holds-barred freestyles and more. “There’s definitely a lot more singing,” she reveals. “There are songs in which there are many beats. There are songs where I’m a little more vulnerable about certain things that may have happened to me. I just feel like you get to know me better with each song and I’m really excited to share that with my fans.”

One thing Saweetie is still spending time with is her long-delayed debut album. The project, still under the name Nice BITCH musicwas expected to come out in the summer of 2021, but the rapper has repeatedly said that she’s in no rush to release it for a myriad of reasons — mainly because she wants it to be perfect.

“That first album sets the tone for your career,” observes Saweetie. “I really took my time with this artwork because it is delicate, sensitive and means a lot to me.”

“I think it is our duty [as artists] to take this art seriously,” she adds. “Not many people have this platform. I am truly grateful to even have the opportunity to make a name that is recognized globally. I still have a lot of work to do, but given that I have so much time to sit with myself and learn about myself as a person, as a woman, as an artist, I just feel like I’m ready to share these stories. I have many stories to tell.”

One icon the self-proclaimed “student of the game” says she’s studied for storytelling tips is none other than JAY-Z.

“I was listening to a bunch of JAY-Z albums the other day,” Saweetie recalls. “Not really. I remember when I would write my freestyle car raps, I’d listen to a bunch of JAY-Z. My favorite album [of his] is likely Draft. What I loved about it was that behind bars you were able to meet a man from New York who came from a block to a businessman.”

Saweetie says her life may look ‘glamorous’ but ‘a lot of hard stuff happens behind the scenes’

With her upcoming album, Saweetie hopes people will get to know her the same way: as “a girl from the Gulf, who went to college, who made it on her own, who beat the odds, got signed and released music; who was doubted and who is still persistent.”

“I just feel like I’ve been through so much, and I’m trying to figure out a way to tell that story through this album,” Single life continues the rap artist. “At first I was so closed off, like, ‘Not to share too much.’ But when I listen to those great albums, e.g The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Draft, [Kanye West’s] Graduation, you could really meet these people. I really just want the world to get to know Saweetie better.”
