Sebastian Stan Transforms Into a Young Donald Trump in Clip from Controversial New Film The Apprentice

Audiences get a new look at Sebastian Stan as a young Donald Trump in his new film Trainee.

On Tuesday, Sept. 3, Briarcliff Entertainment shared a clip from the fictional portrait that features Stan, 42, as a young version of the former president alongside Jeremy Strong as Trump’s lawyer and adviser Roy Cohn. The scene shows two men traveling in the back of a car as they receive a call from a reporter who wants to interview Trump.

As Cohn hands Trump the phone to begin the interview, the lawyer is seen encouraging Trump to get his ideas and quotes to the reporter over the phone.

“Young Donald Trump, eager to make a name for himself as the hungry scion of a wealthy New York family in the 1970s, comes under the spell of Roy Cohn, a bloodthirsty lawyer who would help create the Donald Trump we know today,” reads an official synopsis for the film. “Cohn sees Trump as the perfect protégé — someone with raw ambition, a drive to succeed and a willingness to do whatever it takes to win.”

Traineebased on the script by Gabriel Sherman and directed by Ali Abbasi, had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May. The film immediately garnered significant attention for its searing portrayal of the younger Trump in the 70s as the former president continues his campaign for re-election in 2024. One scene from the film that sparked significant controversy features Stan’s character Trump raping his then-wife Ivana, played by Maria Bakalova.

In her 1990 divorce filing, Ivana described a similar attack, initially describing it as rape. She would return the request later. In a 1993 statement, according to The Guardian, she said: “On one occasion during 1989, Mr Trump and I had a marital relationship in which he behaved very differently towards me than during our marriage. As a woman, I felt hurt… I called this rape, but I don’t want my words to be interpreted in a literal or criminal sense.”

While Trump himself has yet to comment on the film, his presidential campaign’s communications director said in a statement in May that the campaign would file a lawsuit over the scenes, which he described as “blatantly false claims by these fake filmmakers.”

Despite the threat of legal action from the Trump campaign, director Abbasi, 43, appeared unfazed at the film’s May 21 Cannes festival press conference.

“I mean, everybody talks about him suing a lot of people—but they don’t talk about his success rate, you know?” he said then.

Trainee it’s in theaters on October 11.
