Selena Gomez Opens Up About Being Unable to Carry Her Own Children: 'That Was Something I Had to Grieve'

Selena Gomez is open about her future plans for motherhood.

Speaking with Vanity Fair for the outlet’s October issue, published Monday, Sept. 9, the 32-year-old actress and singer explained that she is unable to carry her children.

“I never said this … but unfortunately I can’t carry my own children,” Gomez said. “I have many health problems that would endanger my life and the life of the baby. It was something I had to mourn for a while…”

Gomez previously spoke about complications with lupus, which she was diagnosed with in 2015. She also revealed her bipolar diagnosis in April 2020 during an episode of Miley Cyrus’ Instagram Live show Clear minds.

She added, “[But] I’m in a much better place with that. I feel fortunate that there are wonderful people who are willing to do surrogacy or adoption, both of which are great opportunities for me.”

“It made me really grateful for other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I am one of those people,” she continued. “I’m excited about what that trip is going to look like, but it’s going to look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It will be mine. It will be my child.”

In the November 2022 issue, Gomez recalled crying in her car and thinking about the fact that the two medications she takes for her bipolar disorder will likely mean she will never be able to carry children of her own.

“It’s a very big, big, present thing in my life,” Gomez told the paper, before noting that she still hopes to become a mom in other ways in the years to come.

“However I’m meant to have them, I will,” she added about the possibility of having children.

According to a peer-reviewed WebMD article, bipolar disorder medications can cause problems at birth, including neural tube defects, heart defects, and developmental delays or neurobehavioral problems. However, some doctors recommend staying on such medications during labor, as bipolar symptoms can worsen during pregnancy.

Elsewhere in her Vanity Fair story, Just the murders in the building The star also spoke about her boyfriend Benny Blanc, whom she confirmed to be her sweetheart in December 2023.

“I have never been loved like this… He was just a light. Complete light in my life. He is my best friend. I like to tell him everything,” she told the newspaper.

Gomez’s comments about her whistling come after she revealed that cooking with Blanco really “grounds” her.

“I like fresh food and stuff. I got into that kind of thing because of my boyfriend,” she said. “I’m just in the garden picking out food to cook with. It sounds so silly and petty, but the older you get the more you realize that it’s okay to just be simple and have simplicity.”
