Sen. Kevin Cramer’s Son Faces Manslaughter Charge in Crash That Killed North Dakota Sheriff’s Deputy

Senator Kevin Cramer’s son has been charged with manslaughter in the crash that killed a North Dakota sheriff’s deputy, the Associated Press reports.

According to Bismarck Police, the incident happened on Wednesday. The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office identified the deceased as Deputy Paul Martin in a statement Thursday.

Ian Cramer, 42, of Bismarck “stole his mother’s car, ran through the doors of Sanford Hospital, fled from police and ended up crashing into a Mercer County patrol car resulting in the deputy’s death,” police said.

Earlier, Ian was brought to the Sanford Emergency Room by his mother after he “displayed mental health issues,” Bismarck police said.

After they were parked at the hospital, “Ian got into the driver’s seat and allegedly crashed into the compartment door and fled the scene,” police said. Officers were dispatched to the location around 4:30 p.m. due to damage to the top door of the ambulance bay.

By the time the police arrived, the 42-year-old had already left. However, they were able to track his cell phone to find his location, and other law enforcement agencies joined in.

A police chase ensued, and despite two of his tires being punctured by police-installed tire deflation devices, Ian reached speeds in excess of 100 mph, according to charging documents obtained by the AP.

Charging documents say Ian then crashed into the deputy’s squad car, pushing it “directly into Martin’s person and throwing him about 30 feet,” the AP reports.

“Our entire community has suffered the tragic loss of Deputy Paul Martin. He is our beloved brother in the police force, husband, father and grandfather. Our wound is severe and our hearts are broken,” the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.

“We will put one foot in front of the other and slowly move forward, respecting all humanly possible wishes of his wife and family,” the sheriff’s office continued.

Cramer also shared a statement on Wednesday.

“Earlier this evening, our 42-year-old son Ian was involved in a police pursuit that resulted in an accident in which an officer was killed,” he said, adding that his son “suffers from severe mental disorders manifested by severe paranoia and hallucinations. ”

Cramer said his family is grieving the situation and that they “especially grieve for the family of the hero who tried to help Ian, and we pray that our gracious God will show up as He always does in tragedy.”
