Sepp Straka News

Sepp Straka struggled so severely during his junior year at the University of Georgia in 2013–14 that he was unable to make the men’s golf team. He had to take a redshirt season due to a serious case of the chipping yips. Even winning a tournament seemed improbable, let alone making the PGA Tour.

“I wasn’t very good,” Straka said. “I never truly believed I’d succeed as a professional. More of a dream, really. That fantasy came true, as in late February 2022, Straka played remarkable golf to win his first Tour title at the Honda Classic by overturning a five-stroke deficit going into the final round with three birdies on his final five holes. Straka accomplished this feat, becoming the first Austrian to triumph on the PGA Tour.

It is difficult to believe until you actually succeed, he continued. “You try to believe that you can win.” Unbelievably, this tale begins at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Golf Club Gut Altentann, 10 minutes from Salzburg in the middle of the Salzburg Alps, where Straka’s mother, Mary, managed the golf shop.

Later, she accepted a similar position at Fontana Golf and Country Club, which is located in the spa town of Baden, south of Vienna. At age 11, Straka and Sam, his fraternal twin brother who is two minutes older than Straka, participated in a golf summer camp. Straka learned the game from his father, Peter, at this location. Sam took the administrative decision that the brothers will take golf seriously moving forward after the camp. Straka had been devoted to soccer up until this point and had excelled as a goalie.

When he was 14 years old, the Straka family relocated from Austria to the United States to be nearer to his mother’s side of the family in Valdosta, Georgia. The brothers were signed together by Georgia’s head coach Chris Haack.

Sepp’s game finally found a higher gear in Straka’s senior year after overcoming a 7-8 month period in which he felt as though he couldn’t hit a green, and he turned pro in 2016. But he had already signed up for Q-School once more in July due to his dismal start to the 2018 Korn Ferry Tour season. Ye of little faith, Straka finished third at the KC Golf Classic the following week, earning a spot on the PGA Tour for the 2018–19 season.
