Seth Waugh News

The Official World Golf Rankings have been the subject of some of the most contentious debates between LIV Golf and the rest of the golfing community.

The OWGR has been hesitant to decide whether to incorporate LIV Golf in obtaining world ranking points despite the fact that LIV Golf wants them.

All four major championships — the Masters, the R&A (British Open), the USGA (U.S. Open), and the PGA of America, which oversees the PGA Championship — are represented on the OWGR board, along with the heads of the PGA Tour and DP World Tour.

And those organisations’ leaders share a same viewpoint in that they oppose LIV. As a result, it appears that the OWGR is taking its time making a decision regarding awarding points to LIV. Additionally, the world ranking points earned by players have a significant impact on how players qualify for all four major tournaments.

The less opportunity most LIV players (apart from prior event champions) have to qualify for the majors, the longer they go without being able to receive world ranking points.

Thus, attrition will eventually take control, which appears to be the end goal for these governing organisations.

Seth Waugh, CEO of the PGA of America and a member of the OWGR board, was questioned on Tuesday about what it’s like to “hold the future of professional golf” in his “hands” ahead of this week’s PGA Championship at Oak Hill.

“I’m just one board member, but I’ve been around since 9/11 and through one or two financial crises,” Waugh added. “No, I believe we can manage it,”

Waugh, a board member, responded when asked why the OWGR is taking so long to issue a decision, “That’s a total mischaracterization. A healthy back and forth has occurred. It hasn’t been contentious at all. They have exchanged collegial emails about applying, just like other tours have. Both of us and they have reacted.

Due to how LIV Golf is set up—with 48-player fields, no cuts, and 54 holes of play—this is understandably not a simple problem.

However, the points system might be changed such that LIV winners receive a smaller amount of points due on the smaller fields, the absence of cuts, and the reduced number of holes played.

“If you step back, the whole point of the OWGR is to level the playing field and provide a yardstick by which to judge the game,” he continued. “Measuring trips is what we do. To establish that yardstick, consider tours rather than individual players and how they perform on those tours. That is what we are all trying to achieve. I believe we’ve responded to them quite well in terms of
