Shafqat revealed in an interview that his father wanted him to become an Aalim (scholar). However, by chance, he went to Shahnoor Studios in Pakistan, whereupon he decided to continue his acting career. Initially, he started working as a stuntman in Hollywood movies. After struggling as a stuntman for about 16 years, he got a chance to play the supporting role of Qasim in the 1989 film Kalka. Shafqat played the role of Afzal in Lollywood films like Parinday (1992), Pajero Group as Haji Rasheed Ahmed (1994), Ishtehari Gujjar as Ghulam-E-Mustafa (2001), Naag aur Nagin as Changez (2005), Kafra as Balwant Singh (2011), Main Hoon Shahid Afridi as Bashir Bhatti (2013), and Geo Sar Utha Kay as Ghulam Rasool (2017).
In October 2022, he starred in the movie “The Legend of Mullah Jat” and played Jeeva Nath in the film. Within 10 days of its release, the film became the first Pakistani film to enter the 1 billion rupee club.

Once upon a time, we were shooting for the movie Dil Sambhala Na Jaye in Rawal Lake in Islamabad, and Saud and I were shooting the fight scenes in the water. While performing the scene, Saudi jumped on me and we both fell into the swamp. I couldn’t swim but Saudi could and I told him to save me or I would drown. I screamed help me! help me! But Saud pushed me away, got out of the water, and saved himself. I was covered in water and lost my voice as my lungs were filled with water, I started giving signals with my hands and saw my brother Naveed Cheema jumping up to save me, he didn’t know how to swim either, he was drowned in front of me. ”
- In November 2019, a fake news about the death of Shafqat Cheema’s son Sheharyar Cheema appeared on social media. It later emerged that it was not the son of actor Shafqat, but information about the director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Shafqat Ali Cheema, whose son was killed in a car accident.
