In 2003, Shahida was accused in the counterfeit stamp paper case worth several crores of rupees. She was arrested in 2005 for missing court twice. Shahida suffers from various health issues, including HIV. When she was arrested, the court directed Yerawada Central Jail officials to shift her to a private hospital as she was suffering from HIV. In 2007, her lawyer, Milind Pawar, appealed to Judge Chitra of the Maharashtra Organized Crime Special Control Act Court under Section 439 of the Criminal Procedure Code (legal provisions pertaining to bail). Justice Chitra K Bhedi filed a plea and she was released on bail in 2007. . Milind Pawar explained in his application that Shahida’s health condition was deteriorating and he approached the court seeking bail so that she could receive treatment. The court granted her bail on the condition that she furnish a surety of Rs. Lakhs, stay in Bengaluru for treatment and regularly inform the court about her health condition every three months.

  • Her husband, Abdul Karim Telgi, was the mastermind behind one of India’s biggest scams, dubbed the “Telgi scam of 2003.” The scam involved the production of fake stamp papers worth crores of rupees. Telgi started out by making fake passports and later expanded into making fake stamp papers. He employed about 350 agents to sell the fakes to a variety of buyers, including banks, stockbroking firms and insurance companies. His illegal business is estimated to be worth around Rs 20,000 crore. Telgi faces numerous legal cases across the country related to this scam. He was arrested by the Karnataka Special Task Force in Rajasthan in 2001 following a case filed against him in Bengaluru in 1999. In January 2006, he and some of his associates were sentenced to 30 years in prison.
  • In 2017, Shahida asked a Pune court to confiscate properties owned by her husband, she said in a statement,

    My husband’s will was to the effect that property purchased with proceeds from the so-called fake stamp scam should be confiscated by the government and used for the benefit of the country. I learned that the police still confiscated some property, which was in the names of relatives. I have an obligation to fulfill my husband’s last wishes and bring this fact to the attention of the courts and prosecutors. Therefore, I filed this application. “Terji took false names and used them for the benefit of the state.”

  • In 2022, her daughter petitioned a Mumbai court to serve a legal notice to filmmaker Hansal Mehta to stop him from directing a film titled “Scam 2003 – Abdul Karim Lara Turjic Case”. web series, which was inspired by her father’s life.
