In 1985, Shakuni Chaudhry won a seat in the Bihar Legislative Assembly from Tarapur constituency as an independent candidate. Later, he joined the Indian National Congress and was elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly from Tarapur constituency in 1990 on an Indian National Congress ticket.
