Shalailah Medhora News

Shalailah Medhora from the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) has received the 2014 media fellowship from the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney in collaboration with the World Press Institute.

From a competitive pool of early- to mid-career Australian journalists, Medhora was chosen to join nine other World Press Fellows for a two-month immersion in US politics, business, culture, and media in August of this year.

“Having an international perspective is becoming a prerequisite for the best journalism and editorial practise in an era of global media, the 24-hour news cycle, and the convergence of media platforms,” says Professor Bates Gill, the Centre’s chief executive.

“Shalailah is already very skilled in her field, and the fellowship will give her a priceless opportunity to deepen her understanding of American institutions and culture, while meeting and cooperating with journalists from all over the world,” says the fellowship’s description.

In 2007 Shalailah Medhora began working for SBS as a producer for the Alchemy youth programme. Before beginning her career on television, she rose through the ranks of radio and online journalism. Since 2011, she has worked out of SBS’s Parliament House bureau in Canberra. Medhora formerly worked for Sydney community radio stations 2NSB FM and FBi before joining SBS. At Macquarie University, she earned a Bachelor of Media with Honours in Politics.

As part of the study, travel, and interview programme for the fellowship, which is based at the World Press Institute in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, Medhora will visit Washington, D.C., New York, and other significant US cities. The United States Studies Centre World Press Institute Fellowship has been given out for the past four years.
