Shams Tahir Khan is a well-known Indian journalist. He is best known for hosting the daily crime show “Vardaat” (2004) on Aaj Tak TV.

He was born into a Muslim family. His wife, named Savitri Balooni, was a journalism teacher. She adopted Bhainsoda, a village in Almora, Uttarakhand, and worked for the development of the village. The couple had a daughter named Shamsvi Balooni Khan.

He started his journalism career as a crime reporter in 1993 by joining Hindi daily Jansatta
After working there for seven years, he joined the popular Hindi news channel ‘Aaj Tak’ in December 2000. In March 2003, he started a weekly crime show ‘Jurm’ on ‘Aaj Tak’ which became a huge hit. Later, he started a few crime-themed shows on Aaj Tak including the daily crime show ‘Vaardat’ (2004), the forensic investigation show ‘Raaz’ (2005) and ‘Koi Laut De Mere…’ He was later promoted to Senior Managing Editor, Head of Crime Department and Head of Aaj Tak Delhi. He also reported from Mosul, Iraq, for which he received the ENBA Best International Journalist Award. In 2001, he interviewed Afzal Guru, the main planner of the Indian Parliament attack.

- In 2015, he received the Red Ink Award from the Bombay Press Club for his “Outstanding Contribution to Indian Journalism”. He also received the NT Award for his crime drama Koi Laut De Mere … which aired on Aaj Tak.
