In every opportunity, Shannen Doherty finds a sense of hope and possibility.
During a PEOPLE cover shoot a few days before Thanksgiving, The Beverly Hills, 90210 and Enchanted alum, 52, says she recently realized she was ready to find love again.
“I wasn’t ready at all three weeks ago,” he admits honestly. “And something happens. There’s always a trigger, just a moment you have, someone says something to you, your ex says one thing to you, and you’re like, ‘Okay, yeah, I’m fine. I’m fine .’ I’m done and I can move on in a really healthy way.”
When asked what that future relationship looks like, Doherty admits that he doesn’t know.
“I have a best friend, a male best friend who we joke about being married,” she added. “I don’t know if it was that or if it was that I ran into someone and just felt an instant connection. I’m open, and I wasn’t [before].”
She continues: “I don’t think I’ll be alone forever. I have to love myself and deal with the past, really, before I can move forward, and now I’m pretty sure I’m going to meet someone — hopefully soon.”

After 11 years of marriage, Doherty separated from her third husband, Kurt Iswarienko, in April. (The couple divorced in January, citing “irreconcilable differences” in their divorce petition.)
Although she says she had a lot of “good years” with him, Doherty – who was previously married to Rick Salomon from 2002 to 2003 and Ashley Hamilton from 1993 to 1994 – is ready to move on from her past.
“Look, Elizabeth Taylor still beats me when it comes to husbands and divorces, so I’m good. I’m not there yet, so there’s no reason to be negative about it. S— it’s happening,” she says of her breakup.

The actress has spent the past few years undergoing treatment for stage 4 breast cancer. She’ll discuss her relationships — as well as her career and cancer journey — in her upcoming memoir-style live podcast, Let’s be clear with Shannen Dohertypremiering December 6.
From the moment she was diagnosed in 2015, she admits it was terrifying for her. “It was definitely one of those moments where you wonder if you’re going to make it at all, but it’s also the moment where you learn the most about yourself because you really have to dig deep and muster the strength to face it and keep marching forward,” she says. .
For her, that strength comes from her family and loved ones, and the star says she is also open to the idea of motherhood.

“I would love nothing more than to be a mom,” she says. “I’ve always wanted it, and I think if I do it with my best friend or my partner, then I don’t know how long it will take…”
She pauses for a moment, then continues. “I look at children who have no parents at all – any time [with a parent] it’s better than nothing. I hesitate. I’m waiting for my time, but in the meantime, I have my brother’s seven children and my best friend’s children, who I kind of look at as my children.”
Although Doherty admits that she suffered from several periods of depression, she still hopes for life and love.
“Things haven’t been easy and smooth. Sometimes they’ve been really challenging and it’s hard to suddenly be alone in your 50s with stage 4 cancer. It’s hard,” he admits. “And it was super depressing for a while, but eventually you turn the corner.”
