Sharad Arvind Bobde comes from a famous family of lawyers. His father Arvind Shriniwas Bobde was a prominent lawyer and Attorney General of Maharashtra. His mother’s name is Mukta Arvind Bobde. His elder brother Vinod Arvind Bobde (late) was a senior lawyer and constitutional law expert in the Supreme Court of India. His grandfather was also a lawyer.

Profession

Sharad Arvind Bobde joined Maharashtra BAR Association in 1978. He practiced before the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court and also appeared before the Chief Bench of the Bombay High Court. In 1998, after 20 years of practice, he was appointed Senior Advocate. On March 29, 2000, he was elevated to the post of Chief Judge of the Bombay High Court as Additional Judge. He served as Additional Judge of Bombay High Court for 12 years.

On October 15, 2012, Bobde was appointed as the Chief Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court; after serving as Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court for 12 years. He served as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court till April 11, 2013, after which he was nominated to the Supreme Court by the then Chief Justice of India, Altamas Kabir. On April 12, 2013, he was appointed as a Supreme Court judge by the then President of India, Pranab Mukherjee.

On October 18, 2019, Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi wrote to Union Law Minister of India Ravi Shankar Prasad, initiating the appointment process of the next Chief Justice of India; seeking the appointment of the next CJI and recommending Bobde as his successor. Gogoi will retire on November 17, 2019, and Bobde will serve as the 47th Chief Justice of India from November 18, 2019, for a term of 17 months.
