The new era of Shawn Mendes is finally underway.
The Canadian singer-songwriter has released his new single, “Why Why Why,” along with a music video and another track, “Isn’t That Enough,” both from his upcoming fifth album, ShawnAugust 8 – that is, his 26th birthday.
The “Why Why Why” video features Mendes singing and performing in a barn and river, interspersed with scenes of him performing in an empty space. It was directed by Anthony Wilson and Connor Brashier.
In the lyrics, Mendes sings about a long-lost love with whom he hoped to have a future until their relationship ended. “I thought I was going to be a father,” he sings in the last verse. “It shook me to my core, I’m still a child. Sometimes I still cry out for my mother. Why why why? Why why why?”

“Why Why Why” and “Isn’t That Enough” mark Mendes’ first new solo tracks since the charity single “What the Hell Are We Dying For?” from 2023. Meanwhile, Shawn will be his first new album since the 2020s Miracle.
The “In My Blood” singer announced his upcoming opus earlier this month, revealing the album artwork on social media alongside a video teaser and a candid note about the journey of creating his new material.
“Music really can be medicine,” Mendes said at the time. “2 years ago I felt like I had no idea who I was. A year ago I couldn’t walk into the studio without going into a complete panic. So to be here now with 12 beautiful finished songs is such a gift.”

He continued: “Honestly, I thank God for my friends and family. Life can be brutal, but having a small group of people you trust deeply to see you through makes it so much better. I have no idea how I would have gotten through the last couple of years, let alone make album without you.”
After thanking his collaborators, friends and family, Mendes turned his attention to his fans, “who have been so incredibly supportive, patient and loving,” before adding, “thank you from the bottom of my heart. I really hope you love this album, Yes. I really hope you feel as warm and close to the earth as I do.”
In support of the upcoming album, the “Lost in Japan” musician will hold several intimate concerts across the United States and the United Kingdom from August 8th to October 24th.
