Meanwhile, another man (55) has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, South Yorkshire Police said.

The force said emergency services were called to College Close in the Burngreave area of the city “following reports of violence and disorder”.

While the call was in progress – meaning officers were on the scene – the car “collided with a group of people”.

Footage shared on social media shows the road cordoned off with multiple ambulances and paramedics.

Both arrested men are still in police custody

South Yorkshire Police said: “A 46-year-old man died at the scene and many others were injured, with one person in a serious condition in hospital.

“The man’s next of kin have been informed and are currently being assisted by officers.”

Senior Investigating Officer DCI Andrew Knowles said: “We are now investigating the murder and understand the distress this will cause to those directly affected and the wider community.

“We have a large cordon in the area and are carrying out CCTV and house-to-house enquiries.

“We will be patrolling throughout the night to provide security and speak to anyone who may have information or feel concerned.”
