Shehzad Poonawalla is an Indian lawyer, columnist and internet personality. He is the spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is the younger brother of renowned political and social analyst Tehseen Poonawalla.

Shehzad joined the Indian National Congress in 2008 and began his political career. He grew up idolizing Mahatma Gandhi and wanted to bring changes in the social and political dynamics of the country, so he decided to join the Congress Party. In his early days in the Congress, he worked closely with senior party officials such as Digvijaya Singh, Rajeev Shukla and Manish Tewari. He served as a member of the research team of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) media cell and was appointed as the Vice-President of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) chapter in Pune. In 2014, he was appointed as the Congress Assistant for Maharashtra and was formally trained by the Congress as the national spokesperson. In 2017, Shehzad quit the Indian National Congress due to disputes with the party. According to him, the party no longer follows any historical ideology and is only focused on the progress of the Gandhi family.
In an interview, when asked why he left the Congress, he said:
I left the Congress party because for 70 years they exploited Muslims just in the name of vote bank but they did nothing about it. The most anti-Muslim riots happened during the Congress party’s tenure, but they did nothing about it, so it was a challava for Muslims and “dokhadari” for Hindus. “

Open challenge to Rahul Gandhi
In December 2017, Shehzad Poonawalla openly challenged Rahul Gandhi. He said on social media that Rahul Gandhi was not capable of running for the Indian National Congress and that Narendra Modi was a better candidate than him.
