Shemy Schembechler, the freshly hired assistant director of recruitment for the programme and the son of renowned Michigan coach Bo Schembechler, resigned on Saturday after coming under fire for inappropriate social media statements that appeared on his Twitter feed.
Shemy likes political posts with offensive and racial themes. Shemy has worked as an NFL scout for many years, most recently with the Raiders. Since then, his Twitter account has been inactive.
Shemy Schembechler’s resignation from Michigan Football became effective this afternoon, according to a joint statement from head coach Jim Harbaugh and athletic director Warde Manuel. We are aware of a few social media comments and likes that have upset and worried some members of our community. Coaches, staff, and student-athletes are all welcome at Michigan Athletics, and we fully support the university’s and the athletic department’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
In a statement released on Sunday, Shemy said he owed a “unabashed and unequivocal apology to my hundreds of friends and fellow coaches in the Black community, all communities, the University of Michigan, my father’s legacy, and my family” for “inexplicably and irresponsibly liking things on social media.”
“We owe a debt of gratitude to the countless Black families—as well as all families—who allowed us to share in their tremendous experiences for the success of myself, my family, my father, and our entire legacy. In addition to my faith, family, and father, these Black athletes are among the biggest influencers in my life.
The statement added that they have all taught me the importance of unalienable equality. Our family’s focus and life’s work has been to increase chances for all ambitious athletes, especially Black athletes. The fact that people know what is in my heart and has been since before I was even born instilled in me by my intrepid father is far more important than what I do for a career.
Let this serve as yet another terrible illustration of the need to use better caution and discernment when using social media, not just to respect your lifetime commitments, basic principles, and goals, but also to advance our melting pot’s progress even further. We’ve all made mistakes, therefore I’m hoping for forgiveness based on my extensive life’s work rather than any particular transgression.
