Apollon Limassol and AEL Limassol met in the quarter-finals of the Cyprus Cup.

Former France star Mathieu Valbuena appeared to beat Apollon in the 41st minute before all sorts of added-time drama.

Pedro Marques’ penalty in the 90th minute made it 2-0 before AEL’s penalty made it 2-1 in the 94th minute.

Marques scored again immediately afterwards and that seemed to be it.

However, the horrific scenes then arrived before the final whistle.

And former Livingston defender Luiyi De Lucas was one of the players at the center of the incident.

After making 22 Premiership appearances, De Lucas left Livi last month after a year in Scottish football.

Citing homesickness, the 29-year-old from the Dominican Republic moved to Cyprus to join AEL.

The centre-back was involved in ugly scenes at the end of this rivalry clash, with pictures depicting a chaotic moment.

Moments after the referee called it over, Apollon’s Eliel Peretz can be seen saying something to De Lucas.

The two players then go at each other before De Lucas dramatically swings and delivers a big PUNCH to Peretz’s face.

De Lucas then swings a leg at Peretz, who moves away as other players rush to the scene.

Teammates can then be seen restraining a visibly furious De Lucas from attacking Peretz again.

Peretz can then be seen approaching once more, and the players exchange further words.

The referee showed a red card to both players.

It was not clear at the time exactly what had happened, but it was seemingly clear that the former Livingston man was left angry about something he had been told.

De Lucas broke his silence on the matter today and stated that his opponent insulted him on racial grounds.

And he says he has now informed the police about it.

The defender apologized for, as he said, his own “reckless behavior”.

But De Lucas says his actions came after he was allegedly subjected to “constant repeated insults of a deeply racist and personal nature”.

In a lengthy statement released on xsaid: “With this statement I want to address all Cyprus fans, friends of AEL, the Football Association and all relevant authorities.

“I express my sincere apology and regret for the incident after the cup match. My actions were unacceptable and unprofessional and I want to apologize first of all to my fellow footballer, but also to everyone for my reckless behavior.

“In my professional career, I have never had an incident like this before. In all the teams I played for, my behavior on and off the field was completely professional and I never clashed with another colleague or teammate.

“I do not justify my actions in any way. Unfortunately, my mind was clouded by the unacceptable and unprofessional behavior of the opposing player from the moment he entered the game.

“During his game I received repeated insults of a deeply racist and personal nature. I don’t want to give any foundation to the words used against me because I hope to move on.

“Never in my professional career have I experienced this level of verbal racism on the field, the frustration and humiliation I was experiencing clouded my judgment and reason. My reaction was an extremely poor attempt to stop what was happening to me.

“I want to reiterate clearly that there is no excuse for my actions. Being a part of such a beautiful sport as football that promotes fair play, I feel it is important to clarify what I was going through before my actions.

“I have already filed a complaint with the Cypriot police with the help of my lawyer and I have already started the process of reporting the racist behavior against me to the relevant authorities of KOP, UEFA and FIFA.

“I want to once again apologize to everyone for my behavior and emphasize that my actions have no place in this sport. Moving forward, I am focused solely on supporting my team and my club.”
