Shreyas Santosh Iyer was born on Tuesday, December 6, 1994, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, to a Tamil Brahmin family (Age: 29, as of 2023).
He has loved playing cricket since he was a child. Iyer received his primary education from Don Bosco High School, Mumbai. He graduated from Poddar College, Mumbai.

In 2014, Iyer played for the British Trent Bridge cricket team and scored 297 points in three games, with an average score of 99 points and a maximum score of 171 points. In November 2014, he made his debut in the Mumbai Cricket Team A-list in the 2014-15 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He scored 273 runs in that match, averaging 54.60. He made his debut during the 2014-15 Ranji Trophy season. In his first season, he scored 809 points and was seventh among scorers.

In February 2015, he signed with IPL and was bought by Delhi Daredevils for Rs 260 million. He made his IPL debut on 9 April 2015 against Chennai Super Kings. In IPL 2018, he replaced Gautam Gambhir as the captain of Delhi Daredevils. In March 2017, he was selected for the Indian Test squad but did not play any matches. Iyer made his T20 debut against New Zealand on 1 November 2017 and his ODI debut against Sri Lanka on 10 December 2017. He made his debut against New Zealand on 25 November 2021 in Kanpur.
