Shruti Sharma is an Indian woman who has been crowned with AIR Rank 1 in UPSC Civil Service 2021.

Shruti Sharma was born in New Delhi, India. Her family hails from Basta village in Chandpur Tehsil of Bijnor district in Uttar Pradesh. She received her primary education from kindergarten to fifth grade at Cambridge Primary School in Delhi and later, she attended Sardar Patel Vidyalaya School in Delhi. Sharma served as a member of the student administration during his student days and was appointed cultural affairs secretary, responsible for organizing various school events. She pursued BA in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. She participated in various types of debates during college such as parliamentary debates, traditional debates and round-robin debates. Thereafter, she enrolled in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) for postgraduate studies but dropped out soon after. She later studied at the Delhi School of Economics, New Delhi, for a master’s degree in sociology. While pursuing her master’s degree, she started preparing for the Civil Services Examination at Jamia Millia Islamia Residential Coaching Academy (RCA).

Coming from a family of engineers and doctors, Shruti was the only member of the family to choose art and study history. Her great-grandfather, Dayaswaroop Sharma, was a doctor from Athai, Chandpur. Her grandfather Devendra Dutt Sharma was also a famous doctor. Her father, Sunil Dutt Sharma, is an architect and runs a construction consultancy in Delhi. Sunil also manages a local school called Bal Gyan Niketan School in his hometown Bastar. Her uncle Yagya Dutt and cousin are also doctors. Her mother Rachna Sharma was a teacher and hailed from Bulandshahr. Shruti’s younger brother is a cricketer and represents UP in U25 cricket.

- In a mock interview, she explained her reasons for pursuing a career as a civil servant, saying:
I believe I come from a somewhat privileged background, and as such, I’ve always wanted to do something where I could give back to the community in some way… Secondly, I believe that on a personal level, the diversity and range of what these services offer can be a source of personal growth. The way is also the way to learn a lot of things. “
- During the interview, she also revealed that she has learned Urdu.
- Shruti Sharma made headlines after the UPSC topper list 2021 was released on May 28, 2022. This is a major event in the history of UPSC exams as the top three positions were won by female contestants, Ankita Agarwal bagged AIR 2 and Gamini Singla bagged AIR 3.
- An avid lover of world cinema, Shruti has watched a wide variety of films, including Iranian and Hong Kong films.
- Her elective subject in the UPSC examination was history.
- Her favorite poets are Sarveshwar Dayal Saxena and Dushyant Kumar.
- In an interview, Shruti’s maternal grandmother revealed that she hoped Shruti’s mother Rachna would pass the civil services exam. However, Shruti’s mother lived in a rural area at that time and the coaching center was far away, so Rachna could not fulfill her mother’s wish.
