In 2023, a video of Shubham Soni emerged in the news, in which he claimed to be the owner of Mahadev Book betting app and claimed that he paid Rs 508 crore to Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel for protection. He said he created the app in 2021 in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh. The betting app is an umbrella group that provides an online platform for illegal betting sites to recruit new users, create user IDs, and engage in money laundering through Benami’s complex network. When my friends were in trouble, I started paying protection money of Rs 10 lakh per month to Vinod Verma… Things went well for a while but then my friends got into trouble again. I met Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and Vinod Verma and they told me to expand my business to Dubai”
Soni also said that he was “stuck in this political system” and wanted to return to India from Dubai, but he was “scared”. The video was released by Siddharthnath Singh, central media convenor of the BJP, at a press conference. Eventually, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested a cash courier, Asim Das, who was dispatched from the UAE to transport huge amounts of cash to the ruling Congress in Chhattisgarh for campaign expenses. The ED said cash worth Rs 539 crore was recovered from Asim’s car and residence. The Congress and Baghel denied the allegations and said the video was released by the BJP ahead of the vote. The app came under the scanner of the Ministry of Education in 2023 over money laundering accusations. The main accused in the case are Sourabh Chandrakar and Ravi Uppal.
