The London mayor’s appearance risked worsening already strained relations between Labor and Mr Trump, who is sworn in today.
Ahead of the ceremony in Washington, the Prime Minister sent his “warmest congratulations” and played on Trump’s love of Britain.
He said: “With President Trump’s long-standing affection and historic ties to the United Kingdom, I know the depth of friendship will continue.”
Sir Keir added: “We will continue to build on the unshakable foundations of our historic alliance as we tackle the global challenges we face together and take our partnership to the next level focused on shared opportunities for growth.”
The prime minister hopes to meet the new president at the White House next month.
Labour’s Khan risked inflaming tensions yesterday by suggesting that Mr. Trump part of the “resurgent fascism gripping the West”.
He said: “The hard right and far right are on the march. These are deeply troubling times.”
But on the BBC, Minister Darren Jones said: “I don’t agree with that.
I speak on behalf of the Government and we do not agree with that.
Shadow Foreign Secretary Dame Priti Patel said: “It is not for politicians in other countries to make disrespectful and disparaging comments about President-elect Trump.”
Mr Jones also dismissed reports that Sir Keir’s choice for US ambassador, Lord Mandelson, could be vetoed for the job.
