However, he did not confirm the cause of his mother’s death.
He said: “Our beautiful mum left us last night after a fantastic life. From young Irish rose to Lady Wogan, she was the epitome of style and grace.
“Mother, grandmother and wife, with love and kindness at the core.
“Strength and faith that carried her through many trials in life.
“A sense of humor and an expression that would make you laugh.
“A real lady in every sense of the word. She and dad are hopefully drinking vodka martinis and we’re not making too much of a fuss.
“We love you mom, now and forever.”
Celebrities who expressed their condolences included presenters Jeremy Clarkson and Eamonn Holmes and singer Ronan Keating.
Clarkson said: “It’s terrible when that happens. I’m thinking of you.”
Holmes also wrote: “Mark, I’m so sorry to hear that. What a woman and what a couple. My sincere condolences.”
Keating added: “Sending love my friend. God bless you all.”
Mark – who hosts the podcast Spooning with Mark Wogan – added a second post with a collection of photos “Just as beautiful on the inside”.
Lady Helen, from the Dublin suburb of Rathmines – née Joyce – was a top model in her native Ireland in the early 1960s.
She married Sir Terry in 1965.
SIR TERRY WOGAN
Sir Terry – a radio and TV presenter who spent most of his career working for the BBC – was presenting Jackpot on Teilifís Éireann at the time and also had a Radio Éireann show, Terry Awhile.
Between 1993 and his semi-retirement in December 2009, his BBC Radio 2 breakfast show attracted eight million listeners.
Often referred to as a ‘national treasure’, his TV work included guest appearances on Children in Need and UK coverage of the Eurovision Song Contest from 1971 to 2008.
He was knighted in 2005 after acquiring British citizenship the same year.
MARRIAGE TO SIR TERRY
Lady Helen and Sir Terry were married at her local parish church, Our Lady of Refuge, Rathmines, in April 1965.
The Irish Independent reported: “The couple were besieged by well-wishers as they made their way out and, despite the rain, stopped to meet his fans who gathered around the glamorous pair.
“Dressed in a traditional morning suit, he wore a gray top hat and Helen wore a long veiled headdress and tight dress.”
The couple was on their honeymoon in one of the up-and-coming Spanish resorts – Torremolinos.
They lived together in Taplow, Buckinghamshire, and had a second home in Gascony, south-west France.
The couple had four children and five grandchildren.
Sir Terry’s health deteriorated after Christmas 2015 and he died of cancer on 31 January 2016 at home, aged 77.
