Sister Wives: Kody Claims He Wasn't 'Going to Leave' Christine, Janelle and Meri 'No Matter How Much I Didn't Love Them'

Divorce was never part of Kody Brown’s plans.

Starting off by reflecting on his broken marriage to Meri Brown during Sunday’s September 22 episode Sister wivesKody believes one thing is true: “There’s a lot of wisdom that we’ve been missing in our marriage.”

“I didn’t know who she was when we got married. She was very different,” the 55-year-old patriarch said on camera. “I think there’s some baggage that Meri had that I didn’t know at first. I felt like I could live with that… I can’t live in a world where she’s mad at me all the time.”

Kody’s comments come after he revealed that Meri, 53, has decided to go through their church (aka the Apostolic United Brethren) to seek an official “dismissal” from their 32-year marriage. But Kody disagrees, noting that “the damage is so great that we’re not going to make up no matter what” and he doesn’t “want to be responsible for this church and all their BS.”

When it comes to polygamy through the Brown family’s church, Kody said “a man has no choice after he’s already married.”

“In a polygamous marriage, if he wants to remain faithful and in religion, he cannot ask for a divorce,” he explained. “That’s not allowed. So I wasn’t able to get out of that relationship.”

However, Kody admitted, “At the same time, I didn’t necessarily want to end the relationship. I wanted to know if we could salvage it and fix it.”

“There was a complete nuance about, well, we’re going to figure out our relationship like I’ve been with her a few times, where I’m like, well, here’s a new beginning. We’re going to work this out,” he shared. “Every time I’ve been with her , she wasn’t nice, she wasn’t fun, she wasn’t kind, she wasn’t interesting. I’m trying to be curious with her and I’m bored. And so, I guess Meri honestly feels abandoned.”

“But I didn’t kick me out. Christine, Janelle and Meri decided to leave the house,” he added.

Kody and Meri publicly separated in January 2023. Before that, Christine Brown and Janelle Brown decided to end their marriage with Kody now only married to his fourth wife, Robyn Brown.

“Now, I’m not playing the victim card, I’m just saying it’s the way it is,” Kody said. “I was never going to leave them, no matter how much I didn’t love them. But they made choices that drove us apart. And maybe I made choices that drove us apart, but they eventually moved on.”

Taking a moment to talk about Robyn, Kody said he’s “loyal to Robyn” because she’s “always been loyal to her sisters and she’s always been loyal to me.” And yet, when it comes to the demise of their polygamous family, he still doesn’t think it’s about who is “to blame,” but “it’s a matter of choice.”

“We chose the path we took. This is the life we chose, and when we chose good, we were a happy family, and when we chose bad, we weren’t,” he concluded. “But everyone is on their own journey and I hope that in the end everyone will be happy.”
