Sister Wives: Kody Tells Meri 'I Actually Like You Now' After Split but He's Unsure How to 'Define' Their New Bond (Exclusive)

Kody Brown’s feelings for ex-wife Mary Brown have changed.

In PEOPLE’s exclusive sneak peek of the Oct. 20 episode Sister wivesKody, 55, tells Meri, 53, that he didn’t “like” her for six years, but now he’s realized he does.

At the beginning of the clip, Meri reveals that she’s in a “really good place” after officially ending her marriage to Kody through their church (aka the Apostolic United Brethren) in last week’s episode. The couple has been legally divorced since 2014 after marrying in 1990.

“I feel very calm about our situation, he doesn’t. Some of the things he says are really, really, really mean,” Meri told Kody’s cameras. “He obviously has a lot of internal [feelings] what else needs to be worked on here.”

In their conversation, Kody tells Mera, “Where we are now is… I actually like you now,” as she jokes, “Congratulations.”

Kody insists, “Well, I’m not six years at all,” while Meri says she thinks “it was more than that,” adding, “Be honest with yourself.”

The conversation then turns to holiday plans, and Kody reveals that his only remaining wife, Robyn, told him, “Meri is our family and you have to invite her over for Christmas.”

“I’m not going out for Christmas. I’m not your wife anymore,” insists Meri.

“I usually just ignore her opinion,” Kody jokes to Robyn, while Meri points out, “No, you don’t have to.”

Clearly unimpressed by the remark, Kody tells his ex, “You don’t know me if you don’t think I’m a man of my own.”

He then tells his ex, “I know you’re a man of your own. I also know you consider other people’s opinions.”

Kody admits that he doesn’t “know how we define each other from here,” as Meri says, “We’re exes, let’s be honest. You don’t have to worry about me. I just wish you knew how amazing the person I really am is.”

Meri and Kody publicly confirmed their separation in January 2023 after 32 years together. Prior to their announcement, his wives Christine Brown and Janelle Brown also broke up with him within a year of each other.

During the Oct. 13 episode of the show, Meri explained that the couple divorced ten years ago for legal reasons, but their marriage was actually still going strong at the time.

“Back in 2014, Kody and I were legally divorced, and for me, the whole process was purely about the fact that he could marry Robyn [Brown] legally and then adopt her three older children,” she said. “But our spiritual marriage, our spiritual ceiling was still intact.”

“When we get married, it’s for eternity. That’s the intention,” Meri added as she discussed the official approval of the divorce through the church. “So once I break it off or release it, that means it’s over.”
