Judges Davina McCall, Kimberly Wyatt and Ashley Banjo from Diversity loved his choreography, describing their performances as “the best seen on the live round so far”.

The show saw budding dancers compete in multiple rounds for a prize of £250,000.

The show was shown from 2009 to 2014.

But the dance group confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that their “founding father” had tragically died.

They said: “It is with great regret that we have to inform you of the death of Leon Heywood, one of the founders of the academy.

“Leon was such an amazing person and he was an inspiration to all of us, from students to parents, to supporters and the dance community as a whole, he inspired many of us and was the biggest supporter of all of us.

“For many of you, he was not only a dance teacher, he was a mentor, a friend, a role model, some considered him a father figure or a big brother, and he loved each and every one of you.

“Leon helped pave the way for many of us and shaped us not only into the dancers we are today, but also helped shape us all into the people we are today.

“His students did amazing things and even if your journey didn’t continue in dance, he was proud of all of us and what we all achieved.”

The statement added: “We ask that you give Leon’s family and loved ones time to grieve at this difficult time, all your messages and kind words are read and appreciated and loved at this difficult time. Leon’s life will be celebrated through all of us and his the legacy will live forever…

“Rest in eternal peace Leon aka ‘Boogie’ T is up there forever and always.”

Friends also took to social media to pay tribute to the popular dancer.

One said: “Absolutely heartbroken, Leon was such a great guy. He was so patient, kind and funny… and he will be sorely missed.

“My thoughts are with all of you at Trinity, Leon’s family and friends.”

Another wrote: “From a fellow ex-Warrior, I miss you bro. You did so much for me and everyone you were associated with.”

A third said: “It was so sad to hear this news – I knew Leon through dancing as my youngest son was also involved in another dance school.

“We met at different events over the years and he was definitely a great inspiration to those he taught and mentored. Everyone loved him.”
