Profession
Handloom industry
Sobha Viswanath started her journey in the handloom industry in 2012 by setting up a clothing store called “Weavers Village” in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The founding principles of Weavers Village revolve around uplifting the local weaving community and preserving India’s rich handloom heritage. Sobha launched the ‘Bhoomika’ fundraising campaign on April 7, 2019, to support people affected by the 2019 Kerala floods. The activity involves making a doll that sits on a boat, made from handlooms and textile waste. The project employs women from NGOs such as Mahila Mandiram, including those with physical and mental disabilities. In an interview, Sobha talked about the making process of the Bhoomika dolls and revealed that Deepak, who was involved in designing the dolls, was not sure what kind of expressions he should give the dolls; therefore, he deliberately did not design their mouths.
The dolls became a hit and caught the attention of celebrities like Katrina Kaif, Sonu Nigam and Nithya Menen. In an interview, Sobha said about the Bhoomika initiative and dolls:
Bhoomika means “daughter of Mother Earth” and Deepak Shivraj of Pava Creative Studio designed the mascot, which is a doll. The dolls are made from handloom and textile waste. “bindi” represents hope, while the boat represents sustainability. The dolls had no mouth because Deepak didn’t know what expression it was supposed to have. As we traveled to different places during the floods, we saw children fighting for a bottle of drinking water, we saw women wearing wet clothes and no sanitary napkins, and we heard the pangs of hunger. When we saw this, our hearts sank, so we decided the mascot wouldn’t have any expressions. ”
On Bhoomika’s initiative, Sobha made Chekutty dolls from fabrics damaged during the 2004 Kerala tsunami, symbolizing the strength and resilience of survivors, making them a poignant reminder of the triumph of the human spirit over adversity.
