Soccer Player Kristie Mewis Engaged to Sam Kerr: ‘She’s Just Been Everything to Me’ (Exclusive)

Kristie Mewis and Sam Kerr said yes forever!

Mewis, 32, tells PEOPLE exclusively that she and Kerr, 30, are engaged.

During a chat with the Gotham FC player, the midfielder opened up about how supportive her partner has been during her time in the National Women’s Soccer League.

She recalls to PEOPLE how “tough” it was when the team was in last place during the 2023 World Cup, but she had a support system to help her through the period.

Besides her parents and sister, her fiancee “was just everything to her,” she tells PEOPLE. “My biggest supporter, she always listens to me complain and complain about everything, all my crazy antics,” says Mewis.

Mewis and Kerr first sparked romance rumors during the Tokyo Olympics. They faced each other — Mewis with Team USA and Kerr with the Australians — and after the American team won the bronze medal, the two shared a touching moment on the field.

Mewis sat on the field with Kerr, the captain of the Australian national team, and hugged her to console her after the loss.

Three days later, the pair made their romance official on Instagram as Kerr shared a photo of her and Mewis kissing along with “❤️”.

Since then, they have not hesitated to share their love for each other on all social networks.

As they travel long distances – Kerr plays for Chelsea FC Women in the United Kingdom, while Mewis is a midfielder for Gotham FC in New Jersey – they also capture many of the feelings that come with it.

“I’m always angry on Wednesdays,” Mewis wrote on Instagram in April when she shared a photo of her and her girlfriend locking lips and a photo of a hand-painted “I love you so much” sign.

“Miss & love you,” Kerr captioned the sweet post.

In 2022, they spoke to GAFFER about how their relationship works.

“Of course, it’s hard just being away from each other, but we have FaceTime,” Mewis told the paper about how they’re going long distance.

She added: “It’s really good to be in New York because I can just drop by if I get two days off.”

Their similar career aspirations also help ease the difficulties, Kerr said.

“I think the thing that keeps us going is that we can see the end point. We both just want each other to do so well in their careers. I don’t think you can be in a long distance relationship with someone who doesn’t understand sports. She totally gets it and I get it. So we just support each other.”

She also told the paper that she and Mewis had “set small milestones” to start working remotely. “We find a time during the week to watch the same show and FaceTime or have dinner together or something. But it’s hard.”

Mewis also told the publication that she hopes her and Kerr’s love story can inspire others to be open and proud.

“I think that just being out there and being two girls in love, I think that if we can change the lives of one or two people and the way they feel about each other and how comfortable they feel, then that means a lot to me,” she told STARČIĆ.

The Gotham FC midfielder added: “I love sharing my relationship on social media. So I think if we can change the way one or two people think about themselves, they can look at us and see that we’re happy and that we’re trying to be as successful as possible and that we’re an out gay couple. I think that’s very important.”
