She went to school in Kendra Vidyalaya, Bhubaneswar. She received her bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation and Electronics Engineering from Institute of Engineering and Technology, Bhubaneswar and MBA in Marketing from Symbiosis Center for Management and Human Resource Development, Pune. She was trained in Indian classical music.

Sona Mohapatra started her career at Marico (an Indian consumer goods and services company) as a Brand Manager, managing brands such as Parachute and Mediker. She quit her job and started looking for opportunities in the Indian music industry. She started her singing career singing advertising jingles. Few of her notable works are Tata Salt-‘Kal Ka Bharat Hai’ and Unilever’s feature-‘Paas Aao Na’ campaign. The song was recorded in multiple languages and was broadcast in 13 countries for 4 consecutive years.

In 2006, she made her Bollywood debut as a singer with the song “Lori” from the movie “Family”.

- In 2016, she published an open letter on Facebook criticizing Indian Institute of Technology Bombay for its obvious sexism against female artists. In her letter, she claimed that the institute invited her to sing at the annual cultural festival Mood Indigo. But they put a condition that she could not perform alone and had to collaborate with any male artist.
- In 2018, during India’s ongoing MeToo movement, she accused Kailash Kher of sexually harassing her and labeled Anu Malik a “serial predator.”
- In 2018, she faced massive criticism after she sang “Ahe Nila Saila”, a devotional song written by 17th-century saint-poet Bhakta Salabega, in Odisha. The Odia native said she grossly mispronounced many words in the song, including the poet’s name. Additionally, they questioned her choice of attire for a devotional song. In response to her haters, she tweeted that they should shut up or she would get naked. Her sentence sparked outrage across the state. An FIR was filed against her and her effigies were burned in the streets.
- In 2019, she lashed out at Salman Khan for criticizing Priyanka Chopra for exiting the film Bharat (2019). Later, she received a death threat from one of Salman’s fans. The next day, Sona shared a screenshot of the troll, who apologized for his behavior towards Sona.
