Sonu Punjaban, aka Geeta Arora, a notorious sex crime ring leader who ran a sex crime ring in Delhi and neighbouring states, was sentenced to 24 years in prison for prostitution and human trafficking.

Sonu Punjaban was born in Geeta Colony, Delhi in 1981 (39 years old in 2020). Sonu dropped out of school only till 7th grade.

Parents and siblings

Sonu Punjaban’s father, Om Prakash Arora, came to Delhi from Rohtak in search of work. He used to earn a living by driving an autorickshaw. Sonu’s elder sister, Bala, is married to Satish, the elder brother of Sonu’s first husband, Vijay. She also has two younger brothers, Vijay and Sanjay, who were also part of Sonu’s sex trafficking ring. In 2018, Vijay and Sanjay were arrested by the Delhi police. They were accused of sex trafficking for Sonu Punjaban.

Relationships and Children

Sonu married four men, all of whom were criminals. First, she married carjacker and gangster Vijay in 1996. When she was pregnant with Vijay’s child, he was shot dead in a police encounter in 2004. She gave birth to a son, whom she named Sagar. After that, she married historian Deepak, one of Vijay’s friends, who was also killed by the police in a encounter in Guwahati. After Deepak’s death, his brother Hemant alias Sonu held her hand, however, he was also shot dead in a police encounter in 2006. After that, she married Hemant’s friend Ashok alias Bunty. Bunty, like the others, was eventually killed in a police encounter.

The journey of becoming a sex fraudster

The journey of a common girl to climb the ladder in the flesh trade is quite dramatic. After leaving school, Sonu started working in a beauty parlour. It is said that after her father’s death, one of her colleagues named Neetu lured her into prostitution for easy money and she never looked back. She entered the dark world of flesh trade as a sex worker and after mastering the industry and having her own clients, she opened her own brothel and became a pimp. With time, Sonu’s empire grew in Delhi and several other states. She opened dozens of brothels in different parts of Delhi and in neighboring states. Sonu Punjabban used to run the sex trade in a quite organized manner and the people working for her were responsible for bringing girls into the industry by various means and then finding clients and providing the girls to them.

Sentenced to 24 years in prison

After a long absence from the clutches of the law, Sonu Punjab was convicted in a case for the first time. On July 22, 2020, a Dwarka court in Delhi sentenced her to 24 years in prison for illegally trafficking a 12-year-old girl. While reading the verdict, Additional Sessions Judge Pritam Singh said,

“The convict Geeta Arora alias Sonu Punjaban should first be sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment for violating the provisions of the Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act and subsequently to 10 years’ imprisonment for violating sections 366A (luring a minor girl), 372 (trafficking a minor girl for the purpose of prostitution), 373 (buying a minor girl for the purpose of prostitution), 328 (causing poison), 342 (wrongful confinement), 120B (criminal gang) of the Indian Penal Code. Therefore, the convict should be detained (imprisoned) for a total of 24 years as substantial punishment.” The court while delivering the verdict pointed out that the convict Geeta Arora alias Sonu Punjaban has crossed all the boundaries of being called a woman and should be punished with the strictest punishment prescribed by law.”
