Four days later, her sister discovered a six-page handwritten letter in Jia’s apartment in which Jia wrote about her troubled relationship with a boy. Later, during the investigation, it was discovered that Sooraj was dating her, and the letter also hinted at the relationship between Jiah and Sooraj.

Sooraj was arrested by Mumbai police on June 11, 2013, on charges of abetment to suicide under Section 306. Two days later, Jahan’s autopsy report was released, confirming that she hanged herself and was not murdered. Suraj was subsequently remanded to custody for 14 days and taken to Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai. On July 1, 2013, the Bombay High Court granted him bail of Rs 50,000. A day later, the court ruled that Suraj was not responsible for Jia’s death. Months later, Jia’s mother requested a CBI investigation, and nearly a year later, the Bombay High Court allowed the CBI to take over the case. On December 9, 2015, Sooraj was questioned by the CBI. Later, the CBI filed a supplementary chargesheet in the court in which Sooraj was charged with abetment to suicide under Section 306 of the IPC. After a series of investigations over several years, Sooraj filed a plea in a Mumbai court on October 14, 2017. He petitioned the High Court to expedite proceedings. In 2021, the Jiah Khan suicide case was transferred to the CBI special court. The trial judge stated,
In this case, the investigation was conducted by the CBI/SCB (and a supplementary chargesheet was filed). Special courts are set up to hear cases exclusively investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation and a special judge is appointed to deal with these cases. I have no authority to handle cases filed by the CBI. Therefore, I consider it necessary to transfer this case to the CBI Court. “
Suraj said in an interview with reporters,
I am somewhat satisfied with this because my case should have been heard by the CBI Special Court from the beginning. Now that the matter is before the CBI court, I hope we can bring this matter to a close. If the court finds me guilty, I should be punished, but if not, I should be immune from these charges. “
Nearly seven or eight years after the case, Suraj spoke openly about the case in the media. He said in an interview,
No one understood that this was her decision to do this (suicide), you know, it was her choice. This is only possible because of her mental state. I don’t think it’s really fair to blame someone for that. Because what if I did this to myself today? Who is to blame? I would blame the media for this because they put a lot of pressure on me and wrote false information about me, but you can’t really blame other people for things. I think a person has to be strong, not just from her boyfriend’s support, they need the support from their family, I don’t know why her family isn’t there for her. “
He continued,
I actually kept silent because I respected that family. I respect what this family has been through. But the media has become very irresponsible. They only care about their TRPs. Sometimes I’m in court and things go in my favor and there are a lot of reporters present. I asked them, “Would you write this?” They told me they wouldn’t because it was a positive story and it wouldn’t be followed. It’s unfair, but I also believe in time. “
A special CBI court in Mumbai acquitted Jiah Khan in the suicide case on April 28, 2023. The court ruled that Jahan’s mother had “damaged the prosecution’s case” by giving conflicting statements and suppressing facts. Jahan’s mother Rabia Khan said she would appeal the verdict to the High Court. she says,
The verdict was suspected suicide, but I have always maintained that Jia was murdered. In fact, this reinforces my point. ”
