Squid Game Actor Oh Yeong-Su Sentenced in Sexual Misconduct Case

The 79-year-old actor was sentenced to a suspended sentence of up to 8 months in prison

Squid game breakout Oh Yeong-su was convicted of sexual assault in Seoul, South Korea.

The actor, 79, will spend up to eight months in prison – suspended for two years – following an incident in 2017 when he allegedly hugged and kissed a woman on the cheek without her consent. Oh must also attend a 40-hour sexual assault treatment program, Reuters confirmed.

After Friday’s ruling, Oh denied responsibility for misconduct and said he would appeal the verdict, Deadline reported.

Oh was originally charged in the case in November 2022. He previously told Korean broadcaster JTBC that he had contact with the woman but only “held her hand while leading her” and “just apologized because she said she wouldn’t take the question with apologies.”

During the trial, Judge Jeong Yeonju cited the woman’s diary as evidence and said her claims were “consistent… and appear to be statements that cannot be made without actually experiencing them.”

In the hit Netflix series, Oh played Oh Il-nam, the main antagonist in the Korean drama. He was nominated for a Golden Globe for the role – his first major award – and won.

At the age of 77, he became the first Korean actor to ever win at the awards. He beat out fellow nominees Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Kieran Culkin and Brett Goldstein to win Best Supporting Actor.
