Stan Grant News
Pioneering Aboriginal journalist Stan Grant broadcast his final show on Monday and announced his permanent departure from Australian television screens after a distinguished career spanning more than three decades.
“Racism is illegal. Violation is racism. And I’ve had enough,” Grant wrote last week in a piece outlining his choice.
When the Wiradjuri man became the first Aboriginal presenter on prime-time commercial television in Australia in 1992, he created history. Before going home to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), he won numerous honours in Australian media and worked as a foreign journalist for CNN and Al Jazeera. He is one of Australia’s most renowned and honoured journalists, according to the ABC.
But on Monday night, as he concluded his political panel show Q+A, he appeared defeated and was visibly shaken. For those who have mistreated me and my family, he simply stated, “If your goal was to hurt me, then you’ve succeeded.” Due to Grant’s departure, heated debates in Australia around media diversity and racism have resumed.
What will it suggest for everyone who follows a similar path, if one of the only Indigenous television presenters with a global career can’t be shielded from racism? Ryma Tchier, an ABC journalist, posted on Twitter.
The Indigenous population of Australia has a history dating back over 60,000 years, and half of all Australians were either born abroad or had parents who were.
However, the media that portrays such a diverse community continues to be disproportionately white. According to a 2022 study, more than 75% of the reporters and presenters on Australian TV had Anglo-Celtic cultural roots. At the board and leadership levels, the gap was much clearer.
The five TV networks under investigation acknowledged their lack of diversity in response to the Media Diversity Australia study. The channels, however, also questioned the report’s conclusions and criticised the study’s brief, two-week research window. They also criticised how the report determined cultural background.
Many people noted that they had worked to enhance representation through targeted positions and recruitment or that they had increased diversity in other areas of their output.
However, the bigger problem has long plagued Australian media, and detractors point to it as a factor in high-profile controversies.
A newspaper was widely accused of exploiting racist stereotypes in a cartoon picture of Serena Williams in 2019, but media regulators finally upheld the caricature.
Additionally, Australia’s most popular breakfast programme, Sunrise on Channel 7, settled a lawsuit of racial discrimination in 2020 after a pundit on the all-white panel argued that Aboriginal children should be taken away from their families forcibly.
