Steph Curry Was 'Willing to Try' Anything with Mr. Throwback Wardrobe: 'He's So Cool,' Costumer Says (Exclusive)

Stephen Curry stepped in Mr. Return feet first.

For his first major TV appearance, the NBA star, 36, may have been playing himself, but he was still playing a character. This meant that his wardrobe in the comedy Peacock had to feel like him. For costume designer Olivia Perdoch, she gladly accepted the challenge.

“I wanted to go to the rehearsal and have fun with him, because this is his first time doing this kind of thing,” Perdoch told PEOPLE exclusively. “We did what I think is such a fun show, and I actually had a rehearsal with him before the director got to talk to him. We were the first people to get to him, so we said, ‘Let’s get him excited’ let’s have fun and let’s make him experiment.'”

For Perdoch, that meant introducing the Golden State Warriors star to clothes he might not have chosen for himself — but in which he would feel comfortable and confident.

“The goal was to make it really fun and to introduce him to some new brands, maybe some smaller brands that he might not know and to look like himself without ever looking like he’s wearing a costume.”

She ended up saying she felt like everything looked “really cool and natural on him.”

The “set favorite” was the red jacket Curry wears in episode five, made by a small menswear brand called Second Layer. Perdoch jokes that everyone on the team said they wanted to take that jacket home.

“Part of Steph’s clothing philosophy was to be inspired by sports, because that’s his life, and this character is him,” she says. “I kept thinking, ‘What would you wear walking through the tunnel?’ And kept at it until the end.'”

Perdoch had a bit of a problem with some of Curry’s wardrobe, though — his game gear was his, and some of the practice gear was his, thanks to his contract with Under Armour. All this was provided by the brand, because “he is their type”, as the costume designer says.

The rest fell to her though and she wanted to match it with what you would find in his closet at home, and while she jokes it would have been easier if he had come with a suitcase of his own clothes, he was game for anything she put on him.

“He loved it,” she says of his experience. “He’s so cool. He was so willing to try everything on, even though it was like, ‘I would never wear this or I didn’t wear this or I would wear this.'”

In fact, Perdoch did such a good job that Curry fell in love with part of the wardrobe — and very politely asked to keep a few items, including a pair of Bode pajama pants. Perdoch says she couldn’t say no.
