Stephen Keenan News

A fascinating new documentary called The Deepest Breath, available on Netflix, explores the world of freediving, one of the riskiest sports. The Italian freediving prodigy Alessia Zecchini and their exceptional relationship with safety instructor Stephen Keenan are highlighted in the movie. The Deepest Breath is a truly great documentary to watch and is highly recommended to aficionados of the genre. It is a story of pure passion, fortitude, and almost imaginary heroics, all portrayed elegantly in the most effective manner.

Due to the film’s wide audience, The Deepest Breath gives viewers a decent understanding of the sport of freediving. Starting with the fact that the first competition takes place in swimming pools and the second on the water, the indoor and outdoor contests clearly differ greatly from one another.

Freediving’s fundamental tenet is that the competitor is not provided with any breathing equipment, hence the victor will be the one who can cover the greatest distance in a single breath. Divers in pool contests indoors alternate between ends of the pool until they run out of breath and must surface for air.

Therefore, the distance travelled overall is used as a standard to compare competitors. Outdoor events in the sea naturally make the sport much more difficult and demanding.

Divers are designed to descend vertically from the surface of the water to whatever depth they can reach in one breath since there is an abundance of depth beneath the sea. The athletes must first declare their intended depth in a competition, or at least in the reputable ones depicted in this movie, and the organisers then set down a plate with tags at that precise depth.

The athlete must dive down to one of the tags, recover it, and then swim back to the surface. In essence, this requires swimming twice as deep as the indicated depth: once below and once upward. Before being naturally drawn down by the pressure of the water, the diver first uses a rope that is linked down from the surface to the tags.

A crew of safety officials who are also trained divers is constantly present at the surface to assure the athlete’s safety, however, if the person needs assistance or is touched by any of these safety officials, even on the sea’s surface, then their specific diving attempt is not allowed.
