Steve Barclay News

Not all of the 40 new hospitals promised for England by 2030 will be brand-new, according to Health Secretary Steve Barclay. According to him, the pledge encompassed a “range” of construction projects. The figurine also comes with upgrades and new wings.

A total of 40 projects would still be completed by 2030, Mr. Barclay conceded, although several of the hospitals that had been initially promised would now be built after that year.

In response to a question about whether a renovation could qualify as a “new” hospital, Mr. Barclay said on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme that “if it’s a new wing, a new facility, a women’s and children hospital for example as part of a wider compass… what matters to you as a patient is whether the facilities are state of the art, whether they’re new.”

We’re being honest when we say that there will be challenges with some of the initiatives, according to Mr. Barclay. It can be difficult to fulfil them by 2030 because local issues like land acquisitions and service reconfiguration frequently need to be resolved.

We are being upfront and saying that some plans will take a little longer than 2030, but we’re still going to move through with them.

In the Conservative Party’s 2019 platform, Boris Johnson pledged to erect 40 new hospitals by the year 2030. The administration said this week that eight projects would now be finished after 2030 in order to give more priority to five other more essential developments.

Because of their failing concrete infrastructure, the five hospitals are considered to be in danger of collapsing. Mr. Barclay argued earlier this week that the government would still fulfil its manifesto promise because in addition to these five hospitals and the first projects pledged, the government will also construct three mental health hospitals.

He continued to refer to “40 new hospitals” on Sunday’s show after ultimately acknowledging that not all of them would be brand-new.

The BBC quoted him as saying, “What the manifesto said was 40 new hospitals, and that is what we committed to in the House [of Commons] on Thursday.” According to a BBC investigation published last week, construction has not yet begun on 33 of the government’s promised 40 new hospitals.
