Former Strictly pro James Jordan joins HELLO! to discuss week two of Strictly Come Dancing 2023, where our new line-up of celebrities and their dance partners took to the dance floor in the hope of avoiding the dreaded Dance Off, while viewers bid a sad farewell to Les Dennis and Nancy Xu after landed in the last two places with Nikita Kanda and Gorka Marquez.
Fans took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to discuss the show – including whether the judges’ scores were too harsh and whether certain celebrities were marked down or over – so what does our regular columnist James have to say about it all? Check out the latest on Strictly the Truth below…
In his new video series, James talked about the “extremely high” level of competition throughout the competition, despite the fact that there were several stars who didn’t reach their full potential, including Layton Williams!

Despite topping the rankings, Layton and Nikita still only got a 36 instead of a perfect 40 – but why was that the case, when the judges gave no criticism? James explained: “I’ve never understood that. I’ve never understood that. It might be his best dance! And then they do it again in the final and they get straight 10s. It” It’ll be exactly the same, or sometimes not so as good as the first time they do it. I’m a firm believer that if it’s worth a ten, give a ten.

“I think there’s something that maybe they were told that you can’t give ten in the second week. Your guess is as good as mine. I think it was worth the ten… The only criticism I had was when he was in the frame, he was a little stiff in the frame, a little wooden. It’s still worth a tenner. The only reason I’m ultra, ultra picky is because he’s a fully trained professional dancer.”

Like Layton, James also praised the judges for giving Nigel Harmon what viewers on X called ‘harsh’ criticism, saying: “This is how I feel about it. It wasn’t harsh. They were just giving constructive criticism. They gave are much more constructive criticisms than most other people, so I would take that as a positive.

“Why do they do that? Because they know he can do it. I love Shirley when she’s like that. She can’t really win because I think she was pretty harsh on women last year, and people say, ‘Oh, she just doesn’t like women. She does men. And then this year she seems to be harsh on men, so now they say, ‘Oh, she just doesn’t like men!’ No matter what she does, she can’t really win.”
