He was the longest serving member of staff at a fictional London high school.

Stuart also played Kevin Cross in the TV soap Brookside and appeared in Doctor Who alongside Sylvester McCoy.

He had roles in Casualty and Holby City and starred in a number of films including Those Glory Glory Days in 1990, the 1994 film Present Spirits and Fork In The Road in 1997.

But his favorite role was that of the firm but fair headmaster Mr Robson at Grange Hill.

The series, which ran from 1978 to 2008, helped launch the careers of many actors, including Lee MacDonald and Todd Carty.

Stuart made his acting debut at Leeds Playhouse in 1975 in Tom Stoppard’s production of Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead.

He also played Judge Turpin in Queens Theater Hornchurch’s Sweeney Todd.

Tributes poured in for the actor from devastated fans.

One wrote: “I can’t believe this guy helped shape my childhood. A legend.”

Another said “He was fantastic”, while one wrote: “RIP Stuart,” with a heart emoji.
